This course (CU Boulder Winter 2025) examines the connections between technology, sociotechnical systems, race, and other aspects of identity. Focusing on both historical manifestations of these connections as well as present-day examples, students will examine how society, technology, and social hierarchy are coproduced. Students will explore the historical development and implementation of de facto and de jure exclusion, and the mechanisms that enable these exclusions through technology and sociotechnical systems--from history to the present day. This course will cover a wide range of topics and emphasize BIPOC scholarship, academic + grey literature, and media. Ultimately, students will learn how to recognize mechanisms of exclusion, understand the embeddedness of technology with social hierarchy, critique technology systems, and propose questions of design and research to further consider these questions in future courses, professional, and scholarly endeavors.
